Continuity Is Resolved at the Junction

A thermal bridge is rarely a single line on a drawing. It is usually a place where insulation, airtightness, geometry, and installation responsibility cease to function as one continuous system.

01 · Principles

Continuity Is Resolved at the Junction

InsulationThe thermal layer must remain continuous at every junction.
Air BarrierThe airtight layer must connect without concealed gaps or impractical details.
Surface TemperatureCritical internal surfaces must remain sufficiently warm under design conditions.
Engineering Notes do not replace project-specific calculations, manufacturers’ requirements, or applicable regulations. They preserve the questions that must be asked before the work is accepted.
02 · Analysis

Thermal Bridges

ConditionWhat It MeansTypical Consequence
Geometric Thermal BridgeCorners, parapets, balconies, and changes in form increase local heat flow.Lower internal surface temperatures and increased heat loss.
Material Thermal BridgeA thermally conductive element interrupts the insulation layer.Concentrated heat flow through concrete, steel, or fixings.
Installation DiscontinuityInsulation or the air barrier is interrupted because of installation quality.Cold areas, condensation risk, and unpredictable structural performance.
Window JunctionThe frame position and reveal insulation are not coordinated.Cold reveals, draughts, and a risk of mould.
Roof and Floor EdgeThe envelope changes direction without a properly developed overlap of layers.Linear heat loss and concealed defects that are difficult to detect.

Observe Before Acceptance

Treat the Junction as One System

Review the structure, insulation, air barrier, waterproofing, and finishes together.

Find the Line of Continuity

Trace the insulation and airtight layer across the drawing without lifting the pen.

Check Buildability

Confirm that the junction can actually be built, inspected, and repaired.

Check Critical Surfaces

Use calculations, thermal imaging, or temperature measurements where necessary.

Preserve the Final Detail

Retain approved drawings and photographs of concealed junctions in the project passport.

04 · Warning Signs

Signs Requiring Attention

Compressed InsulationThe design thickness is lost around fixings, frames, or narrow cavities.
Leaky JunctionsMembranes terminate at junctions or depend on later work that will be inaccessible.
Cold RevealsWindow and door openings remain outside the continuous insulation line.
Structure Penetrates the EnvelopeConcrete or steel crosses the thermal layer without a designed thermal break.
05 · On-Site Checklist

Before the Structure Is Closed

The insulation line can be traced continuously through the entire junction.
The air-barrier connection is defined and buildable.
The position of window and door frames is coordinated with the insulation layer.
Floor edges, parapets, and roof-to-wall junctions are fully developed.
Fixings and thermally conductive penetrations have been assessed.
Concealed junctions have been photographed before being covered.
